We are seeking a Senior Applications Developer to support a critical technical infrastructure modernization project for a nationally significant monthly statistical release on industrial production and capacity utilization (IP/CU). This role offers an exciting opportunity to develop robust new infrastructure that exceeds current capabilities.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with an internal team of roughly 20 professionals — including economists, research assistants, data engineers, and analysts — as well as outside contractors, in modernizing the IP/CU data and code infrastructure. The project involves transitioning from legacy FAME software to modern technologies while ensuring robust monthly production continuity.

Location: Washington, DC  |  US Citizenship is Required

Qualification Requirements :
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Physics, Economics, or a related field
  • Minimum 7 years of demonstrated programmer/analyst experience developing software according to Software Development Life Cycles (SDLC)
  • Strong programming skills with significant experience in R or Python; FAME experience is a plus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Reliability and ability to work efficiently on time-sensitive, deadline-driven projects
  • Experience in analysis and design of systems
  • Knowledge of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodologies

Skills Requirements :
  • Proficiency in R, Python, and/or FAME software
  • Experience with SQL-based database systems and modern alternatives such as DuckDB
  • Ability to analyze and study complex system requirements
  • Experience with Computer-Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tools
  • Proficiency with formal specifications, data flow diagrams, and logic flow charts
  • Software configuration management
  • Experience developing block diagrams and logic flow charts for functional business applications
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies including AI and coding assistants
  • Ability to quickly understand complex data structures and idiosyncrasies

Responsibilities :
  • Modernize the IP/CU data and code infrastructure, transitioning from legacy FAME software to modern technologies while maintaining robust monthly production
  • Design software tools and subsystems to support software reuse and domain analyses, and manage their implementation
  • Manage software development and support using formal specifications, data flow diagrams, and accepted SDLC design techniques
  • Analyze functional business applications and design specifications, developing block diagrams and logic flow charts
  • Translate detailed design into computer software; test, debug, and refine applications to produce the required product
  • Review existing programs and assist in making refinements, reducing operating time, and improving current techniques
  • Supervise software configuration management
  • Prepare required documentation including both program-level and user-level documentation
  • Coordinate file transfers and validation with internal IT and communications teams
  • Embrace emerging technologies including AI and coding assistants while prioritizing system robustness and reliability
